The NHL announced today that Zac Rinaldo will be suspended five games for this illegal check to the head of Lightning forward Cedric Paquette.
Rinaldo was only given a two minute minor on the play, but there was no way he would escape without discipline from the league, given his history. He had already been suspended a total of 14 games during his 275-game NHL career.
Since he was recently sent down to the AHL, he can not serve his time until he is back on the NHL roster, so he could be missing much longer than five games.
The league posted a video explanation of its ruling, but since the video player on the new NHL.com sucks and won’t let you embed videos, here’s the tweet from the player safety department.
I have to give it up for Zac this season. He played 52 games before being suspended, so I for one, am impressed.
