Boston Bruins Name Patrice Bergeron Captain
The Boston Bruins announced Thursday that they have named Patrice Bergeron the 20th captain in franchise history.
Who saw this coming? Oh yeah, everyone did.
After Zdeno Chara's departure to the Washington Capitals, it was a no-brainer to select Bergeron as the next player to wear the C. Chara served as captain for 14 years since signing with the Bruins in 2006. Bergeron is entering his 17th season with the Bruins this year.
Bergeron has a 2011 Stanley Cup, a 2012-2013 King Clancy Award, has been nominated nine times for the Selke trophy and has won it four times. If he were to win one more Selke, he would set a NHL record with five wins.
Trophies aside, Bergeron is one of the biggest role models and class acts in the league. No one has a bad thing to say about him whether it be teammates, fans, or opposing players.
“For 16 seasons we have all watched Patrice grow not only into an elite player but also a tremendous leader,” Bruins president Cam Neely said. “Patrice represents the Bruins organization and our fans with integrity, determination, and class. On and off the ice he embodies what it means to be a Bruin, and we couldn’t be prouder that he will lead our team as Captain.”
We will get to see the new captain in action when the Bruins take on the Devils for the first game of the season on Thursday, Jan. 14.
